ACCOMMODATIONS
The Sterling Inn is a charming, Victorian-style
country inn that offers its guests a hearth, indoor pool and spa, hiking
trails, and numerous other enjoyments. The SCBWI Pocono Mountains Retreat
has been given special rates, which vary depending on the type of accommodation
and the number of occupants. Rates range from approximately $170 pp/do
plus tax for a standard room to $240 pp/do in a country cottage suite
with Jacuzzi. These rates include gratuities, lodging Friday and Saturday
evenings, meals from Friday dinner through Sunday country brunch, and
coffee breaks throughout the program. Vegetarian and special diet options
are available. Attendees must provide the inn a $50 deposit to guarantee
the reservation.
IMPORTANT
Reservations at the Sterling Inn are separate. Upon receipt of
your registration, the Registration Coordinator will send you a confirmation
number and the information necessary to reserve your space at the inn.
THE STERLING INN WILL NOT ACCEPT RESERVATIONS WITHOUT A CONFIRMATION
NUMBER PROVIDED BY SCBWI. For prompt confirmation you MUST send
a SASE with your registration form.
THE BRIGHT-EYE CRITIQUE GROUP
Bright-Eyers are eager scribes who meet at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning,
April 4, to participate in quality peer critiques of manuscripts exchanged
ahead of time. The input is priceless and it's FREE! Register by
February 28 by emailing your name, address, phone number, and story
type to Doris Markley at Dymarkley@aol.com.
You'll then receive further instructions.
FIRST READS/WHAT EDITORS LOVE
On Friday at 3:00 p.m., some of our editors will read first pages submitted
by conferees to see if they want to read more. If you'd like to participate,
please bring the first page of one of your writings and place it in
the First Reads box at the registration table. No names on these page,
please, and use double spacing with at least 1-inch margins. We'll try
to read as many as we can.
SCHOLARSHIPS
One full scholarship is available to SCBWI members who show exceptional
promise as writers and/or illustrators and who could not otherwise afford
to attend the Pocono Mountains Retreat. (Transportation will be the
responsibility of the recipient.) Duties may involve helping with registration,
organizing displays, or staffing the book table. The recipient will
not have to miss any program events. Please do not apply if you truly
can afford to attend on your own. To apply, simply send a one-page description
of why you wish to attend, along with one sample of your single best
work (a partial or complete manuscript of any length), to the Scholarship
Coordinator, Kay Winters, PO box 339, Richlandtown, PA 18955.
For artwork, send COPIES ONLY. If you would like your sample returned,
you must enclose a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage.
Scholarship applications must be postmarked by February 28.
MANUSCRIPT & PORTFOLIO CONSULTATIONS
For an additional fee of $35, registered conferees may submit
a manuscript, a portfolio, or a written and illustrated dummy for one
private consultation with a faculty member. These "one-on-one" sessions
are scheduled for approximately 15 minutes each. To participate, you
must be a prepaid, full-time conferee. Please follow these guidelines
closely:
*For a portfolio consultation, send only a
check. Mark "portfolio consult" on your check. Bring your portfolio
to the conference. Do not mail illustrations.
*For critique of a dummy that you both wrote
and illustrated, mail a copy. Do not send original artwork. You may
bring it to the critique session.
*For critique of a fiction or nonfiction manuscript,
submit one picture book, one magazine piece, OR up to 15 pages from
a longer work. Type and double space with ample margins on all sides.
Your name, address, and phone number must appear at the top of the
first page. You must include the type of manuscript on the front page:
Picture Book, Early Reader, Middle Grade Novel, YA, etc.
Submit the manuscript or dummy and your check for
$35 postmarked by February 24 to: Arlette Braman, 5228
Al Jones Dr., Shady Side, MD 20764.
