Judy Wolfman

When Judy Wolfman retired from teaching, she didn’t retire from life. She combined her knowledge and understanding of young children with her teaching techniques and storytelling strategies, and began writing. The result is the Life on a Farm Series, (Carolrhoda Books), two children’s plays (Pioneer Drama, Inc.), several readers’ theater scripts, and stories, finger plays, poems and articles for various children’s magazines (Highlights, Cricket, Turtle, Holidays & Seasonal Celebrations, Nature Friends, Together Time, Crusader, Skipping Stones and Shofar.)

Her first book, Life on a Pig Farm, was named the book of the year for Ag Ed in Wisconsin, and on the Notable Books list in Pennsylvania. Four more books immediately followed – Life on a Goat Farm, Life on a Cattle Farm, Life on a Horse Farm, and Life on a Crop Farm. Four more books soon joined the series – Life on a Chicken Farm, Life on a Dairy Farm, Life on a Sheep Farm and Life on an Apple Orchard. All of the books are illustrated with full color photographs.

Judy’s first play, Red vs the Wolf, received first place in the Margaret Bartel Children’s Play Writing Contest. Since its publication in 1989, it has played throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia. Music was added to the play (1998) resulting in the musical, The Real Story of Little Red Riding Hood. Her next play, The Golden Goose, was published in 2001, followed recently by The Real Story of the Three Little Pigs and In the Soup (an adaptation of Stone Soup.) Her latest book, How and Why Stories for Readers Theatre, consists of 40 scripted pourquois stories from multicultural folktales and American Indian legends.

In addition to writing, Judy is a professional storyteller, and performs many of her original stories in addition to standard tales. She performs in schools throughout the United States, as well as on cruise ships and in foreign countries.

Drawing upon her experiences as an author/storyteller/teacher, Judy presents informal, entertaining and informative author talks, workshops and classes at schools, libraries, community events and conferences. Her slide presentation, From Idea to Book, describes the writing/publishing process and includes the importance of research and rewriting. Get Your Creative Juices Flowing, a workshop for all ages, allows students to create story lines and ideas through a variety of hands-on activities – a prerequisite for creative writing and storytelling. From Story to Play enables students to create dialogue and turn a tale into a play (readers’ theater) - a fun way to write and read.

Storytelling and creative drama workshops are also popular and serve as a strong basis for many of the writing elements.

Although Judy is no longer an elementary school teacher, she still teaches, but on a college level at three colleges - York College, McDaniel College, and Elizabethtown College.
