Nancy Springer

Type of books: Young adult and middle-grade novels. Mystery series based on Sherlock Holmes’s younger sister, adventure-fantasy series about Robin Hood’s daughter, literary fiction grounded in Arthurian mythos, many others

Bio: A lifelong fiction writer, Nancy Springer has published over forty novels, plus short stories and poetry, garnering numerous honors, including two Edgar Allen Poe Awards from the Mystery Writers of America, in 1996 for her children's novel LOOKING FOR JAMIE BRIDGER and in 1995 for her young adult novel TOUGHING IT. Another notable young adult title is I AM MORDRED, an Arthurian novel from the point of view of Arthur's unacknowledged son. Published by Philomel Books, I AM MORDRED received starred reviews from Booklist and Publishers Weekly, was a Parents Magazine Parents Choice award, a Booklist Top Ten Fantasy and Youth Editors Choice, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age. Also, I AM MORDRED received the Carolyn W. Field Award as best children's book by a Pennsylvania Author in 1998. Its companion volume, I AM MORGAN LE FAY, is a Michael Printz Award nominee.

Recent well-received Nancy Springer novels include OUTLAW PRINCESS, from Philomel, the third of the five Rowan Hood volumes, which was voted Best Adventure Book, Disney Adventures Magazine readers’ choice awards, 2004; and BLOOD TRAIL, from Holiday House, about a teenage boy coping with secret knowledge concerning a friend’s murder. Successful with reluctant readers, this title was a VOYA Top Shelf Fiction for Middle School Readers, 2004, a PSLA YA Top Forty title, 2004, and an IRA Young Adults’ Choice listee, 2005.

Just published, THE CASE OF THE MISSING MARQUESS has already received starred reviews from Kirkus and Booklist, which says, “Enola is a high-spirited girl, just the right mix of nascent nineteenth-century feminist and awkward teen, with a first-person voice that's fun to hear.”
When not enjoying her writing, Springer can often be found fishing from a rowboat, or volunteering at the community center in East Berlin, PA., where she lives.
